It's summer on the coast and there are tons of things to do. The area around Scarborough has been a vacation destination for well over a century, and you'll find beaches, amusement parks, mini golf, ice cream, drive-ins, orchards and farms, breweries, live music, and, of course, Old Orchard Beach.
You can also head into Portland, Biddeford, or Saco, and find lots of unique local shops and incredible restaurants (Maine's food scene is far more than just lobster). Go out on the ferry to Peaks Island or take a little cruise around Casco Bay.
Please note that traffic in the summer can be backed up on the highways, so plan your trips with a lateness buffer.
Here are some icons of the area, and some favorites of ours.
The quieter portion of Old Orchard Beach, where Michael's family has been summering for multiple generations.
A favorite of the Lauritano boys, because they basically have it memorized.
Michael operated a carousel here in his teenage years. This is small amusement park, perfect for kids or the young at heart!
An Ocean Park mainstay! Don't walk on the courts and no hard shooting!
The classic Old Orchard amusement park, right on the beach and next to the pier. Don't skip the "honky-tonk" pier, filled with fried food, sugary drinks, and T-shirts of questionable taste.
Not in its original location anymore, but at least it's still there?
Site of the most photographed lighthouse in Maine, Portland Head Light.
A beautiful view of Casco Bay, complete with food trucks and a narrow gauge railway!
One of Michael's favorite trails, filled with lots of wooden bridges and a little waterfall.
Some of the best Neapolitan pizza Michael has had outside of Italy, just a short ferry ride away on adorable Peaks Island.
American Bistro done really well. Their chocolate pudding is a humble masterpiece.
Playful, contemporary takes on Italian food. Lauritano Family approved!
A fun spot for outdoor eating with frozen cocktails. Sarah swears by their brisket tacos!
Michael's favorite James Beard awarded spot! Get there early if you want a full selection.
Donuts made with Maine potatoes. Try the chocolate sea salt or the blueberry glazed!
Classic Diner food with a touch extra finesse. The banana bread and the corned beef hash are top notch!
A brewery with a uniquely backwoods Maine flavor. The atmosphere is especially memorable for its free roaming dogs and children! They have food, outdoor games, and live music (depending on the time you visit).
Michael and Sarah's go-to takeout pizza joint!
Michael & Sarah's local little ice cream shop. The perfect soft serve summer treat where the price is right!
A lovely stretch of Maine beach, complete with two visible lighthouses and an island you can walk to during low tide!
A much loved spot for gigantic lobster rolls!
